In 1984, newly appointed Artistic Director and Conductor Greg Funfgeld inaugurated the Christmas concert. He told the Board the choir members were experienced, fine singers, and they wanted to rehearse more music, rather than spend a full year preparing for the Festival. He proposed a Christmas concert, which has taken place every year since.
We dearly wish we could gather together to present the music and inspiration of Christmas. But for now, let’s all “open our shut up hearts” to share this beautiful season online. It’s our wish that this year’s Christmas concert offers you joy and comfort, and a holiday filled with peace and hope.
Recorded outdoors in Nazareth and in Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem, the concert features members of The Bach Choir, Bach Festival Orchestra and our Bel Canto Youth Chorus, offering seasonal selections from Bach and other composers, along with poetry and sacred texts expressing the beauty of the season.
Note: recorded following Bach Choir COVID-19 protocol.
Among the selections:
J.S. Bach: Arias from the Christmas Oratorio
Robert Parsons: Ave Maria
Gerald Finzi: from Dies Natalis (Day of Birth) – V. The Salutation
Max Reger: The Virgin’s Slumber Song
Adolphe Adam: O Holy Night
Spiritual arranged by Paul Sjolund: Go Tell It on the Mountain
Franz Xaver Gruber: Silent Night
Traditional Gospel Melody: Up Above My Head | Bel Canto Youth Chorus
“Christmas isn’t Christmas until The Choir sings ‘Silent Night’ with soprano descant and Greg says, “Merry Christmas, everybody!” David Umla, Choir member
Premiere TIME: 4pm
Premiere DATE: Sunday, December 13, 2020
WHERE: ONLINE via You Tube
Our Holiday Request:
At this festive time of year, will you add The Choir to your gift list?
We are thankful for the technology that allows us to present this concert online, as our Christmas greeting to everyone. And while technology makes this convenient and accessible for most, the production – like all our virtual concerts – is an expense for the Choir.
Contributions of any amount will help us offset the costs of this concert, including the fees for the Orchestra and the video production. We hope we can count on your support as we continue to produce our music virtually for your enjoyment.
Complete your FREE Virtual Registration below; we’ll send you reminders and links for the performance!
- PLEASE NOTE:
“Reminder” paper tickets will not be mailed after December 8. All registrants will get a link prior to the premiere. Should you have any questions about viewing the concert, please email Mike DeCrosta or Renee James
