Bach Choir Films from the Archives

Join us for this free program as Bach Choir Archivist Cory Dieterly shares his work in digitizing the choir’s media collection and showcases newly digitized films, including 1920s Bach Festival footage, the 1952 film Voice of a Choir, and the 1968 Bell Telephone Hour episode “Going to Bethlehem.”

The Barnette Distinguished Scholar Lecture – J.S. Bach and His String Players with Dr. Daniel R. Melamed

We know the names of almost none of J.S. Bach’s instrumentalists, but his compositions and original performance materials reveal much about their skills, expectations, and how he utilized them. Using Festival repertory and other works, we’ll explore Bach’s approach to strings and discover new ways to listen to his music. Melamed, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, is past President of the American Bach Society, and Director of the Bloomington Bach Cantata Project.

Join us at Central Moravian Church for Cantata in Context, an enriching exploration of Bach’s cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140. Dr. Daniel R. Melamed, Barnette Distinguished Scholar Lecturer, unpacks its historical and musical intricacies. Hear the cantata performed twice – before and after Melamed’s lecture – gaining a deeper understanding and fresh perspective on Bach’s composition.
