Event Navigation
Our Allentown Bach at Noon series kicks off this summer with our first concert at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 9th. Gather with us for this free, inspiring concert series, a musical gift to our community.
One of the world’s most celebrated classical guitarists comes to Bach at Noon this June as Eliot Fisk joins an outstanding quartet of soloists for a rare and unforgettable musical experience. Described by The New York Times as a “Fiery Missionary to the Unconverted,” Fisk has spent nearly five decades captivating audiences around the globe with a deep commitment to expanding the guitar’s artistic possibilities. The last direct pupil of legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia, Fisk has built an international reputation through his performances, recordings, and acclaimed transcriptions of works by composers ranging from Bach and Scarlatti to Mozart and Mendelssohn.
The program opens with several of Fisk’s own transcriptions for guitar, including Bach’s beloved Suite in G Major, BWV 1007, before turning toward the vibrant musical landscapes of Iberian masters through works by Ernesto Halffter and Isaac Albéniz. The centerpiece of the concert is Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s rarely performed masterpiece Romancero Gitano (Romani Ballads), a powerful cycle for four vocal soloists and classical guitar based on the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Written in 1951 for Segovia, the work evokes the sights, sounds, and spiritual traditions of southern Spain, from bustling town processions and religious celebrations winding through narrow streets to intimate reflections on love, loss, faith, and memory.
This unique program offers a rare opportunity to hear one of the guitar world’s most influential artists in an intimate setting while exploring music that bridges Bach’s legacy with the rich traditions of the Iberian Peninsula. Fisk’s appearance also offers audiences a preview of next season, as he will return as the featured Artist-in-Residence for the 119th Bethlehem Bach Festival in May 2027.
The June Bach at Noon is named in honor of Dorothy Hess Baker and her mother, Elizabeth Leith Hess, both former members of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. The concert and the participation of featured soprano and alto soloists are made possible in part by a generous legacy gift from the Dexter F. And Dorothy H. Baker Foundation.
