About the Music
The Bach Choir of Bethlehem celebrates its 140th iteration of the Bethlehem Bach at Noon series with Nicola Antonio Porpora’s Cello Concerto in G Major and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata BWV 140, “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme.” Porpora’s concerto showcases the expressive richness of the cello, blending lyrical melodies and virtuosic passages in a Baroque masterpiece that highlights the instrument’s versatility. Complementing this is Bach’s beloved cantata, a choral gem that invites listeners into a world of spiritual awakening through its elegant interplay of voices and instruments. Together, these works promise a journey through the profound beauty and emotional depth of the Baroque era.
About the Performers
We’ve gathered some of the country’s finest baroque singers in celebration of our 140th Bethlehem Bach at Noon. Soprano soloist Clara Rottsolk, one of our nation’s most sought after performers of Bach, is a familiar and beloved presence here at the Bach Choir. She was the soprano soloist on our recent recording of the Mendelssohn/Bach Saint Matthew Passion. We are also fortunate to have Bass-Baritone Paul Max Tipton return to Bethlehem following his Bass soloist performance at our 2024 Festival.
