SUMMARY:October Bach at Noon
DESCRIPTION:Our Bethlehem Bach at Noon season continues on October 13th at Central Moravian Church. Gather with us for this free concert series\, a musical gift to our community. Hear members of the Bach Choir and Bach Festival Orchestra along with exciting guest artists. Gather with us for this free\, inspiring concert series\, a musical gift to our community. The October Bach at Noon is supported in part by a generous endowment gift from Mrs. Cornelius Ayer Wood Jr. in memory of The Rev. Cornelius Ayer Wood Jr.\, a member of the Choir’s Board of Managers from 1960 to 1977. \nOctober’s Bach at Noon welcomes Dan McCarthy on historical instruments from the viola family and soprano Clara Rottsolk\, a familiar voice to Bach Choir audiences and featured soloist on our recording of Mendelssohn’s version of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion. McCarthy will perform Bach’s Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G Major\, BWV 1027\, on tenor viola\, and the program also includes Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn\, BWV 152\, one of Bach’s few cantatas featuring the viola d’amore and part of the Choir’s spotlight concert at the 2027 Bachfest Leipzig. \nSOLOISTS\nGerman-born recorder player Rainer Beckmann performs with a large variety of early music ensembles in the Philadelphia Tri-State area. He is a founding member of La Bernardinia Baroque Ensemble and New World Recorders. As featured soloist and guest musician\, he regularly appears with groups including Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra Tempesta di Mare\, Philadelphia Bach Collective\, Brandywine Baroque\, Camerata Ama Deus\, Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra\, The Bach Choir of Bethlehem\, Piffaro: The Renaissance Band\, and Vox Renaissance Consort. With recorder consorts Il Flauto Giocoso\, Landini Consort\, Ad Libitum\, and others\, he has extensively performed in Germany\, the Netherlands\, France\, Belgium\, Italy\, Israel and Brazil. Rainer teaches at Amherst Early Music workshops\, coaches the recorder players of Temple University’s Early Music Ensemble\, and serves as the music director of the Philadelphia Recorder Society. He is a graduate of the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands where he studied recorder and historical performance practice with Heiko ter Schegget\, Baldrick Deerenberg and Marion Verbruggen. \n  \n Praised for his “handsome\, light tone” (New York Times) and “heroic” performances full of “emotional intensity” (Gramophone)\, bass-baritone Brian Mextorf is in demand as a recitalist\, concert singer\, and ensemble performer. Recent seasons have included performances as soloist in Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem at Trinity Church in New York and with New Orchestra of Washington\, Mozart’s Requiem at Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall\, Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli and Schubert’s Mass in G at Carnegie Hall\, Messiah with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street\, and Raphael in Haydn’s Creation. A frequent collaborator with Brooklyn Art Song Society\, recent recitals have included Barber’s Despite and Still\, Wolf’s Michelangelo-Lieder\, selections from Eisler’s Hollywooder Liederbuch\, Ravel’s Don Quichotte à Dulcinée\, Hannah Kendall’s Rosalind\, and Jolivet’s Trois complaintes du soldat. Ensemble performances include a tour of South Korea with the American Soloist Ensemble\, as well as appearances with the New York Philharmonic\, New York City Ballet\, Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, Grand Rapids Symphony\, Santa Fe Desert Chorale\, Musica Sacra\, and The Clarion Choir. Other recent solo debuts have included Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater (La traviata) and National Sawdust (AIDS Quilt Songbook recital). A district and regional winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions\, Brian has performed as soloist with Opera Theater of St. Louis\, Virginia Opera\, Opera Saratoga\, The Philadelphia Orchestra\, Richmond Symphony\, and Virginia Symphony Orchestra.  \nDan McDougall is a familiar face in the Bach Choir family\, having been a proud member of Bach Festival Orchestra since 1995. He is the principal bassist of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra\, PostClassical Ensemble\, Washington Concert Opera\, and assistant principal of the Philadelphia Ballet Orchestra. He’s played three seasons with the Santa Fe Opera\, and performs regularly with Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, Philly Pops\, Opera Philadelphia\, and others. Eclectic freelancing has placed him on stage with Julie Andrews\, Luciano Pavarotti\, Peter Gabriel\, and The Who\, to name a few. Following his performance of the Koussevitzky concerto with the Delaware Symphony\, Gail Obenreder of the News Journal wrote: “He played the technically and physically demanding work with impressive – and expressive – technique and great delight\, treating the audience to the unexpectedly lyrical qualities of this orchestral foundation instrument.” After graduating from Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music\, he remained on staff and career studies faculty\, most recently as Associate Dean of Student and Academic Affairs. He left in 2018 to focus more on performing and travel – beginning with a 14\,000-mile road trip to Alaska with his Airstream trailer that summer. \n “With a silken voice capable of extraordinary power” (San Diego Union-Tribune)\, soprano Clara Rottsolk’s solo appearances have taken her across the United States\, the Middle East\, Japan\, and South America. She has appeared as a soloist with prominent modern orchestras and period instrument ensembles under the direction of conductors including Grete Pedersen\, Nicholas McGeegan\, Jos van Veldhoven\, Sir John Rutter\, Stephen Stubbs\, Andrew Megill\, and Ruben Valenzuela.  Also dedicated to chamber and recital repertoire\, she performs with ensembles including Bach Collegium San Diego\, TENET\, Piffaro the Renaissance Wind Band\, Colorado Bach Ensemble\, Acronym\, The Sebastians\, Washington Bach Consort\, and the Seattle Bach Festival. SUMMARY:August Bach at Noon
DESCRIPTION:Our Allentown Bach at Noon concludes at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday\, August 11th. Gather with us for this free\, inspiring concert series\, a musical gift to our community. \nThe Bach Choir of Bethlehem is proud to announce that its August Bach at Noon concert will feature beloved vocal works by Bach and Schütz in a landmark collaboration with the Triad Emerging Artist Residency\, bringing together ten of the region’s most promising young professional singers alongside the Bach Choir’s distinguished ensemble. \nTriad is a four-day fully funded partnership among Music in the Somerset Hills\, The Bach Choir of Bethlehem\, and Tenet Vocal Artists\, with support from Trinity Church\, NYC. Designed to invest in the next generation of professional singers\, Triad gathers a carefully selected cohort of post-collegiate artists in August for an intensive immersion in Baroque works and new music. This year’s residency begins with two days of rehearsal and coaching at Trinity Church in New York City before moving to Bethlehem for the culminating performance as part of the Bach Choir’s celebrated Bach at Noon series. Participants receive daily coaching\, masterclasses in performance practice and vocal health\, and professional development experience alongside distinguished faculty — all at no cost. \nThe two ensembles will join together for Heinrich Schütz’s luminous Selig sind die Toten (SWV 381) and selections from the Musikalische Exequien (SWV 279–281)\, a work by Johann Michael Bach\, and Larry Lipkis’s Prayer of Saint Francis— written to celebrate the wedding anniversary of past Bach Choir Board President Jack Jordan and his wife\, Betsy. The program also features the Triad singers in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Jesu\, meine Freude (BWV 227)\, one of the composer’s most beloved and demanding motets. Faculty for the residency include Bach Choir Artistic Director and Conductor Christopher Jackson\, Stephen Sands (tenor and Artistic Director of Music in the Somerset Hills)\, and Jolle Greenleaf (soprano and Artistic Director of Tenet Vocal Artists) — all of them distinguished ensemble leaders and practicing singers. \nFor the Triad singers — artists on the cusp of full-time professional careers — the encounter offers something no conservatory curriculum fully teaches: a model of music as community practice\, sustained and alive across generations. For the Bach Choir\, it is an opportunity to do what this ensemble has always done: perform extraordinary repertoire and model what music looks like when it belongs to a community. \nThe August Bach at Noon is supported in part by a generous endowment gift from Ronald R. Miller in memory and celebration of the life and work of Maestro James A. Simms. \n \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE DIGITAL PROGRAM \n\nBach at Noon concerts are also broadcast live on WWFM\, a long-time media sponsor. SUMMARY:June Bach at Noon
DESCRIPTION:Our Allentown Bach at Noon series kicks off this summer with our first concert at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday\, June 9th. Gather with us for this free\, inspiring concert series\, a musical gift to our community. \nOne of the world’s most celebrated classical guitarists comes to Bach at Noon this June as Eliot Fisk joins an outstanding quartet of soloists for a rare and unforgettable musical experience. Described by The New York Times as a “Fiery Missionary to the Unconverted\,” Fisk has spent nearly five decades captivating audiences around the globe with a deep commitment to expanding the guitar’s artistic possibilities. The last direct pupil of legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia\, Fisk has built an international reputation through his performances\, recordings\, and acclaimed transcriptions of works by composers ranging from Bach and Scarlatti to Mozart and Mendelssohn. \nThe program opens with several of Fisk’s own transcriptions for guitar\, including Bach’s beloved Suite in G Major\, BWV 1007\, before turning toward the vibrant musical landscapes of Iberian masters through works by Ernesto Halffter and Isaac Albéniz. The centerpiece of the concert is Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s rarely performed masterpiece Romancero Gitano (Romani Ballads)\, a powerful cycle for four vocal soloists and classical guitar based on the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Written in 1951 for Segovia\, the work evokes the sights\, sounds\, and spiritual traditions of southern Spain\, from bustling town processions and religious celebrations winding through narrow streets to intimate reflections on love\, loss\, faith\, and memory. \nThis unique program offers a rare opportunity to hear one of the guitar world’s most influential artists in an intimate setting while exploring music that bridges Bach’s legacy with the rich traditions of the Iberian Peninsula. Fisk’s appearance also offers audiences a preview of next season\, as he will return as the featured Artist-in-Residence for the 119th Bethlehem Bach Festival in May 2027. \nThe June Bach at Noon is named in honor of Dorothy Hess Baker and her mother\, Elizabeth Leith Hess\, both former members of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. The concert and the participation of featured soprano and alto soloists are made possible in part by a generous legacy gift from the Dexter F. And Dorothy H. Baker Foundation. \n\n \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE DIGITAL PROGRAM \n\n\n\n\n \n\nClick the above logo to livestream this month’s Bach at Noon \nSupport the Bach at Noon Concert Series!\nSupport the Bach at Noon concert series with a freewill donation at the concert using the provided envelopes\, donate online\, or text BNOON to 44-321.
